Safety

We strive to make Fenrock a safe fun introduction to climbing for all children and novices, however there are some guidelines that must be followed to ensure everyone’s safety. These are explained in our induction video but extra care should be taken when supervising children.

  • No running in the centre
  • No standing underneath other climbers
  • Follow the supervision guidelines below at all times.

Please note our supervision ratio for novices aged 12-15yrs has recently changed to 2:1 as recommended by the Association of British Climbing Walls.

supervision guidelines

Unfortunatly at this time Fenrock does not provide climbing for this age group

Children must be accompanied 1:1 by a parent or guadian on the mats at all times.

Children must be accompanied 2:1 by a parent or guadian on the mats at all times.

Please note our supervision ratio for novices aged 12-15yrs has recently changed to 2:1 as recommended by the Association of British Climbing Walls.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guadian at the centre for thier first visit. After this they may climb without an adult present.

The 14+ academy is for children with a passion for climbing that would like to climb unsuervised.

They must show an aptitude for the sport and have good awareness of their surroundings. Please ask at reception if this is something you are interested in.

14+ program

Independent climbing for children between 14 – 15

This session aims to assess the competence of children between the ages of 14 – 15 in climbing and ensure their safety while engaging in this thrilling activity. One of our experienced staff members will supervise your child for a minimum of one hour before conducting a comprehensive questionnaire to evaluate their skills and knowledge. Upon successfully passing the assessment, the child will be able to climb at Fenrock without adult supervision.

What is the Induction Assessment?
The Induction Assessment is a one-hour session designed to assess your climbing abilities and knowledge of climbing safety, warming up, reducing impact, and gym induction. The session is one-on-one, meaning that it will be just you and your instructor. If you pass the assessment, you will be allowed to climb unsupervised.

What to expect?
The assessment will involve a mix of practical climbing and theoretical questions. Your instructor will assess your abilities and knowledge to ensure that you can climb safely and with good bouldering etiquette. They will also provide you with feedback on how you can improve your climbing technique.

What should I bring?
You should bring comfortable and suitable clothes for climbing, including climbing shoes. If you don’t have your own shoes, you can hire them from Fenrock for an additional fee. You should also bring water and a snack if you think you might get hungry during the session.

What will I be assessed on?
You will be assessed on your knowledge of climbing safety, warming up, reducing impact, and gym induction. Your instructor will ask you a series of questions and observe your technique while you climb. The aim is to ensure that you can climb safely and with good bouldering etiquette.

What if I don’t pass?
If you don’t pass the assessment, don’t worry. You can take the assessment again free of charge at a later date. Your instructor will provide you with feedback on what you need to improve on and how you can prepare for your next assessment.

What if I have special requirements?
If you have any special requirements, such as a disability, please let us know before your assessment. We want to ensure that everyone can take part in climbing, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information sheet. We wish you the best of luck in your assessment and hope that you enjoy climbing at Fenrock. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask your instructor.
